“Wait, what?” you ask. Why yes, I’m doing a fan-cast for a movie remake of the book series, Percy Jackson.
**UPDATE – May 22, 2020
Hello everyone! With HUGE recent news of Disney+ officially picking up the Percy Jackson series for a new live-action adaptation, I just wanted to point out a couple of things. One, this is a FAN CAST. I literally have no say in the casting of the series – this is entirely for fun and maybe, HOPEFULLY, someone in the industry would take notice. Two, this fan-cast was made over two years ago so some fan casting may have aged out for the kids. I’ll try to update everything and complete the fan-casting for other PJ books (as only the first two have been completed) but since two years ago I’ve been quite busy moving and starting a new job. Thanks for taking the time to read this!**
The reason I am doing this is because of the recent buy-out of 20th Century Fox by Disney. Likely, this includes the Percy Jackson franchise. What I hope this means is that Disney will reboot the series and give us a more accurate adaptation of the novels. Disney is definitely not unfamiliar with working on children/young adult adaptations and particularly on the Greek side of things (Hercules).
The first book, in case you’re unfamiliar, follows Percy Jackson as he discovers he is a demigod, son of Poseidon. This is a big deal as the Big Three – Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, swore an oath to not have any more offspring because of what occurred in the past – an important backstory the previous adaptation neglected. Because of this, when Poseidon claims Percy as his son (after an intense Capture the Flag), the already restless Olympians grow even more suspicious towards each other. This, tied with Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt, sets the Olympians on edge and is the cause of their brewing fight. With that and the prophecy from the Oracle Delphi sets the course of Percy’s quest in the novel to retrieve the lightning bolt and return it to Zeus.
You shall go west, and face the god who has turned.
You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned.
You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend.
And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end.
Warning — If you haven’t seen the film or read the novel, I’d be cautious and not read my comments associated with each character. Some include spoilers.
I’m putting the age range between how old Percy is in the book to about 20, in case Disney decides to do the same as Fox and age the main characters up. But with the series being picked up by Disney+ I think it’s very likely they will be casting new faces for the main trio!
I think Alexandra did fine as Annabeth in the films but she was too old for the role. It was pretty clear she was older than Logan/Percy. So hopefully this time, they’re more faithful to her book age (although I wouldn’t be surprised if they aged her and others up a couple years). Again, it’s also very probable someone new will be cast in the role.
I didn’t like the character approach of Grover in the films as I felt the attitude was different than how he was described BUT he was funny. Hopefully this time around, they can keep that humor but also the actor acts more like how Grover is in the series. Grover is a bit complicated though because he’s older than he looks but we’ll see how Disney will cast him!
Out of the previous adaptation’s casting, I think I liked Luke’s the best. But I didn’t like how they went about Luke’s big reveal. The big sky battle was a bit over the top, particularly given their ages in the book and how Percy is just learning how powerful he can be.
Clarisse La Rue
The brash daughter of Ares was sadly missing in the first film (although appears in the sequel). Whoever portrays her will probably be older than the main trio based on how she’s described in the books. Hopefully this time, we meet her in the first film and not the sequel.
I didn’t mind Piers as Chiron and was disappointed they had recast him in the sequel. Whoever they cast for a potential remake, however, will hopefully be faithful to the books. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with a veteran actor for the role and hire new actors for the kids.
Stanley Tucci was great in the second film as Mr D but he was missing in the first film, which is odd since he’s the camp director. Anyways, I thought Tucci was great as Mr D so I added him on here in case they decide to use previous films’ actors…
This will include only those who make an appearance in TLT. Future fan-casts for sequels will have the rest of the gods and goddesses.
Percy isn’t supposed to see all of the other gods (particularly in their true forms) in this novel except for a few. So hopefully this doesn’t happen again. Anyways, I actually was impressed with the casting of Sean as Zeus and wouldn’t mind seeing him in the role again. But in case that doesn’t happen…
I was a little more than upset when they didn’t add the Ares story line to the previous adaptation. Even more so when he wasn’t in the sequel either. So hopefully this time, they’ll include him and cast the right actor. I enjoyed reading the interactions between him and Percy, even if Ares was a prick.
Like Zeus’ casting, I didn’t mind McKidd as Poseidon. But again, I don’t know if they’d use the same actors from the previous adaptations. So just in case, here’s a bunch of other ideas from fans and myself.
I really hope they don’t mess up the Hades story line as they did in the previous film. Hades, like Zeus, had something of his stolen (Helm of Darkness) and it makes Percy and Poseidon look even more guilty. In this scene, Hades did/does not want the bolt (unlike how the film had shown him to be). The Big 3 knows how powerful they and their offspring are which is why they aren’t at war anymore.
Medusa’s casting with Uma Thurman was great, and was actually a really popular fan casting choice! A rare triumph for fans! I’m not sure if she’d return again for the role, but one can dream! Otherwise, here are some other great actresses for the role.
If you’ve read the series, you probably noticed some characters missing. Minor/small characters I tend not to fan-cast as typically lesser known or completely unknown actors fill those roles.
(This includes Mrs. Dodds, the 3 Fates, Furies, Gabe Ugliano, Echidna & Chimera who I think could be cut from the film).
